The future is now! – Building your strong evidence-informed acupuncture practice
ARRC Symposium & BAcC Annual Conference 2023
15 to 17 September, 2023 | Yarnfield Park, Staffordshire, UK
Using findings from recent research work in the field of menstrual and reproductive health, this presentation explores how acupuncturists and researchers are working together to bridge the gap and further develop our profession, benefiting our patients and healthcare systems.
Practitioners play a crucial role translating knowledge from the Classics and adapting it to modern times and their specific populations. This includes aspects such as point selection, rationale, needle technique, and stimulation.
In turn, researchers can use such pragmatic information from cliniciansโ experience towards guiding trial design, supporting evidence-informed practice and practice-informed research, so we can all contribute towards tomorrowโs classics.

Evidence based acupuncture – state of the art
Patients increasingly seek for acupuncture as part of their multidisciplinary treatment strategy, and concepts such as โintegrative medicineโ and โpatient centred careโ are now fundamental pillars for medical care. In the last two decades, research into acupuncture as a medical treatment increased at twice the rate of research in biomedicine, meaning that we now know more about acupuncture than ever before! Consequently, there are now over nine thousand positive recommendations for acupuncture from almost four thousand different publications, resulting in thousands of acupuncture recommendations and inclusion in clinical guidelines for integrative care, as seen recently for cancer pain in the USA.
Acupuncturists with a strong evidence-informed knowledge are now at the forefront of delivering such integrative care, many in multidisciplinary teams already working in hospitals. This lecture provides you with an overview of the most recent work and the important findings that are supporting acupunctureโs implementation within healthcare systems worldwide.
In recent years, research work in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), dysmenorrhoea, and IVF highlighted the central role of acupuncture dosage, including number of treatments, their timing in relation to the menstrual cycle or the fertility schedule itself, and the points used. This includes aspects such as rationale for point selection, practitionerโs training, and needle stimulation, for example electroacupuncture or photobiomodulation.
In our clinical practice, we adapt the most up-to-date acupuncture knowledge to provide a treatment that works for our patients in the real world. Consequently, our pragmatic acupuncture treatments help to develop research design, for example modifying the Paulus protocol for current IVF treatments, and influencing point selection and dosage for the management of PCOS symptoms.
This presentation explores findings from recent acupuncture research work in the field of menstrual and reproductive health. The goal is to support your evidence-informed practice and promote practice-informed research, contributing towards writing tomorrowโs classics.

This includes aspects such as rationale for point selection, practitionerโs training, and needle stimulation, for example electroacupuncture or photobiomodulation. This knowledge will support your evidence-informed practice and promote practice-informed research, contributing towards writing tomorrowโs classics.

Help Writing Tomorrowโs Classics โ Building Your Strong Evidence-Informed And Integrative Practice Of Acupuncture For Menstrual And Reproductive Health
This lecture helps practitioners developing and promoting worldwide collaboration between each of us in our clinics and in research teams, supporting evidence-informed practice and practice-informed research, so we can all contribute towards tomorrowโs classics.
Fine Needles Supporting Sperm, Eggs, and Petri Dishes โ Our Role in Integrative Reproductive Health
Our lecture brings international expertise from three different countries to cover aspects of research and practice focusing on male and female reproductive health, as well as ART support. The collaboration is a testimony to the strength and viability of our vision.
The first lecture focuses on acupuncture used alongside ART โ acknowledging folliculogenesis and emphasizing the preparation for those 120 days, all the way to the work in the IVF clinic which includes support for ovarian stimulation, endometrial growth, and pre- and post-embryo transfer.
The second session provides practical solutions to address the gap between clinicians and researchers, along with presenting the latest updates from acupuncture research on polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as the work from Cochrane Review Groups on ART and dysmenorrhea.
In the third session, the spotlight is on male reproductive health and how an integrative, evidence-informed acupuncture and TEAM approach can help improve sperm quality.
